What are Depressions?

What are Depressions?

I would like to explain depression from a perspective strongly shaped by spiritual and yogic approaches. Depression is primarily a state in which one’s own intelligence, thoughts, and emotions work against oneself.
Only a small percentage of cases are pathological or genetic in origin and require medical intervention. The majority of depressive states are "self-created" through psychological patterns.
Depression requires an enormous amount of energy and intense thought. However, those who become depressed channel this mental power in the wrong direction. Instead of fostering their own well-being, the mind generates intense negative emotions. In its extreme forms, depression is like "slow-motion suicide." A primary cause of depressive states is that people become too lost in the logical dimension of their minds. When life is dissected purely analytically and logically, it loses its mystery and vitality—which can lead to frustration and, ultimately, depression. I see a direct link between the rise of depression in society and modern lifestyle habits. The key factors are:
Poor diet and a lack of physical activity.
A lack of connection to nature and the five elements.
The tendency to immediately label everyday moments of sadness or disappointment as clinical depression and to dwell on them.
To break free from this downward spiral, I recommend shifting the focus away from the mind:
Through physical activity and exercise: Challenging the body helps get the energy within the system flowing again.
Awareness instead of compulsion: Through yoga and meditative practices, one can learn to create distance from one’s thoughts so that they no longer run on a compulsive loop. Nutrition & Nature: Consuming certain foods and spending time in nature are said to stabilize the system.
